Tobias Award Application Process
The Seth Tobias Awards are an endowment established in the department in memory of Mr. Seth Tobias, a major figure in the advertising field. Mr. Tobias was an amateur photographer, devoted to his work. His Nikon, Leica and Hasselblad cameras were donated to the department and formed the nucleus of our check-out equipment.
All Tisch Photography & Imaging majors are invited to submit work for these three annual awards of $250 each. Previous winners of Tobias Awards are ineligible to apply.
A jury of two professionals evaluates the work submitted by applicants. Past juries have included, Evelyn Daitz (Witkin Gallery), Howard Greenberg (Howard Greenberg Gallery), Russell Hart (American Photography Magazine) Ambreen Qureshi (Business Director, deMO), Brent Sikemma (Wooster Gardens), Kathy Ryan (Picture Editor, NY Times Magazine), photo editors Julie Mihaly and Jennifer Miller, Jane Magazine, artists Sylvia Plachy, Erica Uhlenbeck and Michael Martone among others.
Applicants are invited to submit up to ten prints of related work or an artist's book. You may also submit a CD of jpegs at 72 dpi, with a maximum dimension of 1280 pixels wide or tall. If your work is 3D or an installation, please submit installation shots in the form of prints or a CD. If your creative work is in the form of a web site, submit a CD or indicate the URL on your application. Make sure your submission is coherent and professional. No one will explain it for you. The work MUST BE in a proper protective envelope or box with your name and telephone number on the outside, and please mark it Tobias Award. No work will be accepted without a completed application form. The prints should be of presentation quality. Matting or mounting is optional and not necessary. Your name must be on each print, book, or CD (front or back). WORK MUST BE PICKED UP after the judging.
The juror's names and winners will be announced as soon as possible following the judging.
