Dean's Roundtable, Fall 2003

One of the great benefits of studying at the Tisch School of the Arts is the School's location in the cultural capital of the world.  Tisch takes advantage of the steady stream of artists and industry professionals visiting New York through a variety of programs intended to introduce students to prominent figures in their intended fields.  One of these programs, Dean's Roundtable, brings small groups of students and distinguished visitors together for lunch and conversation in the Dean's Office.  Recent Dean's Roundtable guests include the following:


Sam WaterstonSam Waterston 

Sam Waterston, Law and Order DA, Jack McCoy and Tisch parent focused on the importance of optimism in preparing for and meeting the challenges of an actor's life. Students from the Department of Drama and Graduate Acting posed thought-provoking questions and engaged Waterston in a lively discussion.

James BurrowsJames Burrows 

James Burrows, son of Broadway theatrical legend Abe Burrows, was born into the art of comedy/drama, and has subsequently applied his experience and extraordinary talents to television as director and producer of hits such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Cheers, Frasier, Taxi, Will & Grace. His numerous anecdotes and recollections included the history of theater and television comedy, philosophy, career tips, and many laughs.

David ChaseDavid Chase 

David Chase, Creator and Producer of The Sopranos, brought the script and daily footage from one of last season's episodes, and explained each scene's angle and direction. Mr. Chase also discussed the arduous journey from concept to "the pitch" to HBO to Emmy award-winning series. Dramatic Writing and Film & TV students were engaged in an entertaining discussion.

Ted HartleyTed Hartley 

Ted Hartley, Chairman & CEO of RKO Pictures and Co-Producer of the new Broadway show, Never Gonna Dance. Students from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program heard the fascinating journey from jet fighter pilot to Hollywood actor to film studio executive to Broadway producer. Hartley also described the evolution of the Kern musical show from concept to opening.

Amy Heckerling, Tisch alumna, and now noted film writer/director is best known for the critical and box office hit, Clueless. Department of Writing, TV, film and acting students gathered to hear Heckerling's post-Tisch success story.
