Various internships are available with photographers, galleries, museums, publications, libraries, agencies, etc. The department itself sponsors internships and some faculty members also offer placements. Students may register for a maximum of 6 credits (usually 2 to 4 per semester). For each credit, the student must work 4 hours per week for the regular semester time period (14 weeks). Grading is pass/fail, based on an evaluation procedure at mid-semester and at the conclusion of the experience.
To register for an internship please complete the following steps:
1. The internship listing and job descriptions are available in the department library. Please refer there first; if you need additional guidance, set up an appointment with Mark Jenkinson.
2. If you are interested in an unlisted opportunity, arrange for the prospective sponsor to complete the Internship Sponsor Application form to be submitted to Mark Jenkinson and approved before registration.
3. Call the prospective sponsors and arrange an interview; inquire about what you should be prepared to submit (resume, portfolio, etc.) Ask questions so you know exactly what the internship entails.
4. Notify Mark Jenkinson of your internship interests. When an agreement between student and the sponsor has been made, both should complete the Internship Agreement Form (contract), sign it, then the student must bring the form to Mark Jenkinson for his signature.
5. Submit the completed form signed by you, your sponsor, and Mark Jenkinson to Irene Cho during the "Drop/Add" period (the first two weeks of classes), and she will register you.
Additional Requirements
There will be two required meetings scheduled for students to discuss their internships and for each student to read the sponsor's evaluation. Notification of these meetings and evaluation forms will arrive via email, so please make sure your current email address is on your contract. In addition to your weekly internship obligations, interns are responsible for attendance at group internship meetings and the submission of the contract and evaluation forms on or before the response deadlines. Failure to meet these responsibilities will result in a failing grade.
