The Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts is pleased to present "Walking Britain", an exhibition of 22 large color photographs by alumnus Matthew Kime, Class of 2002. There will be an opening reception on June 16th from 6pm - 8pm in the Tisch School’s Gulf and Western Gallery.
Matthew Kime is the 1st recipient of the annual Tierney Family Foundation Grant at NYU which was established in the Department 2005. The goal of the Tierney Grant is to encourage photographers to continue to develop as artists after graduation and to enhance their creative capabilities.
With the support of the grant, Kime walked 550 miles through the British countryside over a six-week period. Kime documents a particular interaction between landscape and culture in which the idea of the man-made appears in natural vistas and visa versa.
The project developed from a simple idea - finding images by covering a vast distance on foot, taking accommodation along the way. Kime traveled three separate long distance trails in Wales, northern England and Scotland and experienced a variety of both landscape and culture. “The British countryside is particularly well suited for this endeavor because of its geography and rich history, “ says Kime, whose large-format images capture the rich variety of landscape found in Britain.
