H82.1017 Studio 4 Credits
Prerequisite: Photography & Imaging II, Photography II or permission of the department.Since the creation of photography, artists have been staging private performances for the camera. This course examines both the history of performance art and performances designed specifically for the audience of a camera. Historic study includes Leonardo DaVinci's spectacles, tableaux vivants, 19th-century allegorical photo tableaux, spirit photography, porn, body art, feminist art, and contemporary staged/constructed photographs. Class projects include performing for the camera, incorporating photography/photographic imagery (via projections, etc.) into live performances as well as performance exercises. The emphasis is on photography as an extension of performance rather than as document.
