H82.1220 Stu 4 Credits
Offered Spring only. Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of the department. This is a Photography & Imaging and Art and Public Policy Course where the NYU students collaborate
with teens in Lower Manhattan to create photo stories about their lives. Working in teams of two, the
NYU students will co-facilitate small workshops with teens from the Lower East Side Girls Club and
Norman Thomas High School. Digital cameras will be provided for the teens to photograph their
families, friends, and communities to create photographic essays exploring their day-to-day lives, dreams,
concerns, and social-political challenges. During the course time for NYU students, focus will be on
workshop development, discussion of challenges, and supervision. There will also be guest speakers and
visits to other community-based art programs. The course will produce a website where the final
projects will be published at the end of the semester. With a grant from the NYU Office of Community
Service, funding has been provided to hire a web designer and assistant who offer Photoshop and web
tutorials as needed. When you plan your schedule, make sure you have a minimum of two free
afternoons a week; Saturdays are also a possibility. Please note that although this is a demanding course,
but it does not involve working on your own photographic projects.
Community Collaborations started in 1996 in the Photography & Imaging Department. This will be the first semester that
the course will work exclusively digitally. To see past work created in this course, visit http://www.photoandimaging.net/coco,
or see the books created by the high school students in the department library. P&I majors that have completed Community
Collaborations will be given first consideration to work as paid assistant teachers in the summer pre-college program. If you
have questions, please email lorie.novak@nyu.edu.
